Interview 1 2012 – Where Angels Suffer
Hello Randy, I salute you. It is very nice to have you here for an interview and I thank you from the heart that you will answer some questions of mine.
1. How did the story of W.A.S. start? Please introduce the all-star band „Where Angels Suffer“ to all my readers first. Cause I know there are still of my readers which didn`t already know your new band yet.
Steve: The story of W.A.S. started when a good friend of mine Scott Gaines told Randy Piper to get off his ass and reform Animal. So that was the original plan. Randy reached out to me cause he heard from Scott Gaines that Metal Church folded. I loved the material and jumped aboard. The line-up was now Randy Piper, Steve Unger & Rich Lewis. We still needed a drummer and second guitarist so I said „why don’t we get my good friend Stet Howland“ who was the longest standing drummer for W.A.S.P. Stet also dug the songs so he was in. It only seemed rite to ask fellow bandmate and guitar god Chris Holmes also from W.A.S.P. if he was interested so we did and he was. Since we had more of the members of W.A.S.P. than Blackie’s W.A.S.P. Scott Gaines came up with the brainstorm to make the name resemble the old logo so people would recognize who was in the band. The name of the band is actually Where Angels Suffer, W.A.S. for short. Randy and Rich had all these great songs from Animal that they really didn’t do much with so we started to rerecord the material and set out to take over the world.
2.What is WAS doing at the moment?
Steve: W.A.S. is now gearing up to do the summer tour season and then in the fall get back into the studio to record some new stuff. And yes ya better fasten your seatbelts and lock up your daughters cause we will be coming over to Europe to hit it good and hard.
3. Steve have you got any musical projects going besides WAS at the moment? Would be great to learn more about it.
Steve: I actually have 2 other musical projects I am workin with. First is my two kids Devon & Derek are killing everywhere they play with their band Sin Circus. I manage, produce, drive and even roadie for them. You will be hearing about them very soon. They have several videos on youtube now and are heading into Howard Leese’s (HEART) studio in 3 weeks to start recording their Cd. Sin Circus is… Devon Unger-Guitar & Vocals, Derek Unger-Bass & Vocals, Dylan Perry-Drums & Hunter Durham-Guitar. My other project believe it or not is a kickin country/rock band called Wesley-James. We are presently in the studio recording as well, so as soon as we finish I’d love for everyone to check it out. I was actually in this band before joining Metal Church, when Metal Church took off I didn’t really have time for Wesley-James anymore due to the large tour schedule MC had so this was put on the back burner but not forgotten.

4. Well so I read that Stet is part of some kind of reality show. Could you tell us something more about it. What kinda show is it and what is it all about?
Steve: Yes Stet does have a show called Stet TV. It’s alot of fun. it’s basically Stet going to clubs with a license to talk to hot chick’s in minimal clothing getting them to do things their moms probably would not approve of. Good stuff. Stet is a great guy and alot of fun to be around and that pretty much sums up his show.
5. Which is your favourite bass guitar you are playing when you are playing concerts? And which brand are you normally using?
Steve: I own about 40 basses, I was endorsed with ESP guitars during the Metal Church years so I have about 25 ESP basses. I love them all. I also have a custom USA bass that was made specifically for me by my good friend and owner of USA guitars Tommy Rosemond. Probably my favorite bass is my Warwick, I even named it, ELVIS. If I had to go into battle with only 1 bass it would be ELVIS.
6. Last but not least please leave a final message for all my readers and please feel free to add anything you like to say. You have the final word.
Steve: Final message is Where Angels Suffer Loves all our friends and fans and we thank you for all the support you have given us. We all know if it wasn’t for you we would be swinging a hammer or digging a ditch to make a living so thank you so much for allowing us to live our dreams.
Steve, I thank you so very much for taking your time doing this interview with me.
Thank you for letting us know anything about the amazing WAS. I wish you all the best for your career and hope that I will have the chance to see you and the boys live when you hit Germany sometime soon. All best wishes and hi to the rest of WAS as well.
